Coming into adulthood, many begin to reflect on the forces, positive and negative, that have shaped their current course. The ease with which you can form meaningful relationships and find a focus for your energy and passion, be it education, work, or a creative outlet, is influenced by your biology, your environment, what you have experienced in relationships in the past, and what you have come to believe about your own strengths and weaknesses. Therapy is a great opportunity to examine all of these influences and consider what you may want next for yourself.
I prefer to work longer term with my adult clients. Therapy can bring you into contact with your foundation, and making changes at that level takes time. How long therapy takes really depends on the individual, but I find it difficult to get at lasting change in six months or less. Many of my clients stay for years, and some come multiple times per week. They report this helps them get deeper into their thoughts and experiences and make better use of our work outside of session. However, this decision of how much and how often is made in collaboration with myself and my clients, and not everyone needs the same thing.
For those who already know they are seeking more in-depth work, in the coming months I will have an opening for someone who could benefit from 4x/week psychoanalytic treatment. If this is something you are interested in, I would be happy to meet with you to hear your story and decide together if this is the right option.
